Dr. Charles Geddes grew up on a family farm near Pilot Mound, Manitoba. He received a B.Sc. in Agroecology and a Ph.D. in Plant Science from the University of Manitoba where he conducted undergraduate research on crop/weed allelopathy, and graduate research on volunteer canola ecology and management. Dr. Geddes has been a Research Scientist with Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada in Lethbridge, Alberta for the past eight years. His research addresses the growing issue of herbicide-resistant weeds across the Canadian Prairies by characterizing new weed issues, generating knowledge on their distribution, impact, biology, and ecology, and designing strategies to manage them effectively. Dr. Geddes has published >50 peer-reviewed articles in scientific journals and serves as associate editor for the journals ‘Weed Technology’ and ‘Canadian Journal of Plant Science’. Among other service roles, Dr. Geddes is the founder and chair of the Prairie Weed Monitoring Network, an initiative that aims to help prairie farmers manage weeds strategically and successfully through knowledge and innovation. The network achieves this goal by coordinating weed surveillance, anticipating new weed threats, and evaluating their impact across farms in the Canadian Prairies to inform appropriate mitigation strategies.
