LOCATION: Centennial 1

THURSDAY, February 11, 2027 – 2:00 – 2:40pm

Dr. Ahmed Abdelmagid is a Research Scientist in Oilseed Crops Pathology with Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada at the Morden Research and Development Centre in Manitoba. His research focuses on soil-borne and root diseases of soybean and pulse crops, including Fusarium, Aphanomyces, and Phytophthora. His program integrates field trials, disease diagnostics, pathogen identification, host resistance, seed treatments, biological inoculants, and crop rotation to develop practical disease-management strategies for Western Canadian production systems. He works closely with growers, industry partners, provincial specialists, and academic collaborators to translate research findings into applied recommendations for crop health and productivity”.

New Lessons from Soybean and Faba Bean Research in Western Canada

“Root rots caused by Fusarium, Aphanomyces and Phytophthora continue to challenge soybean and pulse production in Western Canada. This presentation will highlight findings from multi-year field research examining crop rotation, cultivar resistance, biological inoculants, and seed treatments. Studies include soybean responses to rhizobia and arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi, the performance of Phytophthora resistance genes and oomycete-active seed treatments, and the influence of faba bean rotations on root rot, soil health, and subsequent crop performance. The latest 2026 results will be integrated to provide practical considerations for disease management and rotation planning”.
