Drones are a relatively new and dynamic way of applying crop inputs. Although relatively inexpensive to buy and easy to operate, there are many issues to consider before making a purchase. The deposit uniformity (poor) and swath width (narrower than advertised) are chief among the problem areas, as are drift and evaporation potential during application due to the requirement for small droplet sizes. Tendering efficiency is a key component to productivity, with flight times to empty the tank of less than 5 minutes. These issues are discussed with reference to recent research results.
