Pollen Beetle: An Emerging Threat for Canola

The pollen beetle pollen beetle, Brassicogethes viridescens Fabricius (Coleoptera: Nitidulidae) is an introduced pest of Brassicaceae plants in eastern North America. Currently found in Quebec, Brunswick, Nova Scotia and PEI, it is predicted to expand its geographic range into the major canola growing areas in Canada. This heightened the need for research to better understand the pest under Canadian conditions before it expands into these regions.

This presentation will provide current information and research findings on the life cycle and phenology of pollen beetles, their damage potential and threshold, best monitoring techniques, insecticide resistance, varietal attraction and movement within the field.
