I’m a 5th generation farmer and professional agrologist. We own and operate a small but diverse farm operation with a heavy focus on soil health and profitability. We also own and operate a consulting business that helps fellow farmers navigate through the current landscape of farm incentive programs via grant writing, program awareness and general program portfolio management. We also offer specialized soil health orientated agronomy coaching and support. In the past I worked for PepsiCo helping to develop and execute on their Canadian Supply chain carbon inset programs for Canola, oats and potatoes.
The Reality of Farm Incentive Programs: The good, bad and ugly
The current landscape of on-farm programs is saturated with a variety of different programs coming from various levels of the government, value chain, non-for profits, and the list goes on. This brings a lot of exciting opportunities and financial assistance! However, it also brings confusion, frustration, and ultimately a lack of producer uptake. We will go over some real case studies of how a conventional farm and a “regenerative” farm contrast and compare to each other regarding program eligibility. The case study will showcase the “messy” landscape that exists with duplicate reporting, administrative and other challenges that inhibit the success rate of program uptake. However, it will also showcase the real financial potential that exists there for stacking incentives. What BMPs are most incentivized currently, who is benefiting the most from them, and who is getting left out?
