4R Nutrient Stewardship After a Dry Year

This past dry year has left both challenges and “gifts” for farmers.  The “gift” is in the form of high residual nitrate levels in many fields, which should help defray the cost and uncertainty of fertilizer supply.  Other 4R Stewardship principles will need to be harnessed to make most efficient use of expensive nutrients – primarily band placement, allocating nutrients to those crops and fields most likely to respond and even short term sufficiency approaches to rates which will deplete soil reserves (to be replenished at a later date).
